Will Barty defend her title in Miami?

Ash Barty did not waste too much getting past Elina Svitolina in straight sets to win the WTA Finals title and cap off an impressive year 2019 at Shenzhen.

Barty, who was going into the final on the back of three titles during the year but having lost all her previous five meetings to Svitolina, went on to capture the win 6-4, 6-3.

The first set was a battle for both players, turning out to be an entertaining set as none of the players were broken till the 10th game. Barty faced faced a break-point in the ninth game that she saved in a game that saw four deuces and then came back to herself get three set points.

The Aussie frittered away the first two before making it count off the third to pouch the set 6-4.

The elusive break of serve in the first set came early in the second when Svitolina got a couple of chances in the third game and prevailed on the first one to take a 2-1 lead. Barty was back immediately, turning things around to level things off at 2-2 and then went one better with another break of serve to take a 4-2 lead.

The Ukrainian did get one back when she broke Barty again but that was the last time she would win a game in the match as the Aussie finished it off with successive games.

Svitolina, who had won four titles last year, was gunning for the first this season having gone into the match 39-21 on win-loss. She had excellent form going into the title-decider, having won all her four matches and dropping just one set. Barty, on the other hand, had dropped a match to Kiki Bertens but came through the round-robin phase with wins over Belinda Bencic and Petra Kvitova.
