Casper Ruud v Alejandro Davidovich Fokina Head to Head

The pair have never played before – this will be the first meeting between the Norwegian, and the Spaniard, who is five months younger than him.

Ruud, Beaten by Kecmanovic in Service Battle

Ruud lost his opening match in Group A on Tuesday afternoon to the Serb Miomir Kecmanovic, an opponent he has faced on the junior tours since they first met as 12-year olds.

It was a match where serve would prove to be the dominant factor. In the first set, each held their own with relative ease to set-up a tie break but, with the scores 4 -4, Ruud made a couple of errors from the baseline to give Kecmanovic set points. He eventually converted one to take a one-set lead.

The second set followed a similar pattern to the first, with both players trading serves to force another tie-break. This time it was Ruud who forced an early mini-break, but surrendered it when he could not deal with a booming forehand from his opponent. He then mistimed a forehand of his own and Kecmanovic took full advantage to stretch his lead.

With the scores level at 2 – 2 in the third set, another error from Ruud gave his opponent the chance to force the first service break of the match which he duly took, and Kecmanovic then consolidated it to see out the match in an hour and 16 minutes.

Davidovich Fokina, Pushed Top Seed De Minaur All the Way

By contrast, Davidovich Fokina, the least experienced player in the tournament. almost pulled off a major surprise against the top seed in Milan this week, Alex de Minaur, in their match on Tuesday.

The Australian established an early lead, breaking in the third game of the first set, and then holding serve to strike first. However, the Spaniard stayed in the match, held his serve throughout the second set, and, in the resultant tie-break, earned a mini-break with a topspin backhand. Three set points followed, and he duly converted the third to level the match.

When Davidovich Fokina broke the de Minaur serve in the first game of the third set, a major upset seemed on the cards. However, that spurred the Australian to raise his game, and he won the next four games to win the set, and romped through the fourth set as well for the loss of just one game.
