Daniil Medvedev v Rafael Nadal Predictions & Preview
Daniil Medvedev and Rafael Nadal have met twice in their career, both times on the North American hard courts this year. While Nadal won their first meeting at the finals of the Canada Open in Montreal convincingly, they played an epic US Open final soon thereafter, which Nadal won in a nail-biting five setter. After playing in two finals, this time they meet at the Tour Finals, having both lost their openers and fighting to stay alive in the tournament.
Medvedev went into his opener against fellow ‘Next Gen’ Stefanos Tsitsipas with a 5-0 head to head, but it was not meant to be his day. The Russian who has had a phenomenal season but has complained of fatigue of late, looked a little off-color just as he did at the Paris Masters opening match, and his opponent took full advantage of the situation.
Tsitipas put up an impressive performance with a straight sets win and looked in good form through the match putting pressure on the Medvedev serve and playing the crucial points with a lot of confidence. The loss puts Medvedev in a corner where he must win both his remaining matches to have a chance at qualifying for the semi-finals.
World number one Nadal came into his match against Alexander Zverev also with a 5-0 head to head, but recovering from an abdominal injury, he was up against it from very early on. German Zverev put up an aggressive approach, and was on the attack, ensuring that the pace of the surface did not give Nadal any time to settle into any sort of rhythm.
A very convincing straight set loss for Nadal followed soon thereafter, putting him also in a must win situation for the remaining matches, and to hold onto the number one ranking. While doubts remain about his fitness, the Spaniard mentioned in the post match press conference that he felt healthy and in no pain.
A promising match ahead of us that is crucial for both players. While Medvedev’s match against Tsitsipas was one of inches, expect him to come back strong. Nadal on the other hand continues to struggle with the fast indoor courts and this year seems like any other. A match that could either way, but will all the challenges Nadal is facing, it seem like the Russian starts as a strong favorite.
Expect Medvedev to win a close three-setter.

Stefanos Tsitsipas v Alexander Zverev Predictions & Preview
Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas have met four times in their career thus far, with Tsitsipas leading 3-1, having won the last three meetings, including both meetings this year. Both players came into their respective openers against Nadal and Medvedev with a 0-5 head-to-head, and were able to successfully turn the tide.
Tsitsipas who had a good first half of the year, continued his resurgent form from the Asia Swing after a disappointing Wimbledon and US hard court season. The Greek was a finalist at Beijing, a semi-finalist at Shanghai and at Basel and carried his good run of form to his opener against Medvedev. A controlled performance, playing to his strengths was a good game plan adopted by Tsitsipas who clinched a straight-set win and is now looking at a chance to play in the semi-finals.
Defending champion Alexander Zverev who has had an otherwise disappointing year with just one ATP 250 title at Geneva, looked in sublime form in his opener against Rafa Nadal. Playing aggresively from the beginning, he was able to continuously put pressure on the Nadal serve, and never let him adjust to the surface. Zverev’s last three wins at the O2 arena, have been straight set wins against Federer, Djokovic, and Nadal, a feat paralleled by none on these indoor courts. A victory against a player of the stature of Nadal will give Zverev the much needed boost to look at a deep run this week.
This is another eagerly awaited match where both players will be looking to all but qualify for the semi-finals. While Tsitipas has been dominant in this match-up, Zverev is hitting very good form at the right time. Expect Zverev to come out blazing and capture his semi-final spot with this win.
