Rafael Nadal v Stefanos Tsitsipas Head to Head

The pair have played each other five times before, with Nadal leading their head-to-head series by four matches to one. There have been three meetings between the pair of them this year. Nadal won the Australian Open semi-final, and their meeting at the Rome Masters, but Tsitsipas won their encounter in the semi-final of the Madrid Masters.

Nadal Pulled Himself Back from the Brink

At one stage on Wednesday’s afternoon, Rafael Nadal’s hopes of winning this event for the first time, and ending the year as world number one, were hanging by a thread.

Having lost his opening match to Alexander Zverev, he knew that he had to beat the in-form Russian Daniil Medvedev to keep his hopes alive. The trouble was that, after dropping the first set, but fighting back to level in the second, his form deserted him at the start of the third set. Medvedev raced into a four love lead, and then took a five-one advantage, before forcing a match-point in Nadal’s service game.

At that point, Nadal produced a brilliant drop shot to save himself, and, taking heart from that, his performance levels rose dramatically, and the winners started to flow on both wings. He got the score back to five all, and then, when the set went to a deciding tie-break, powered past the Russian to win the match in a little over three hours.

He now must be Tsitsipas and hope that Alexander Zverev loses to Daniil Medvedev, otherwise he will be eliminated from the tournament on head-to-head countback.

Tsitsipas, Youngest Competitor Makes the Semi-Final

The last time Tsitsipas played in London, he was beaten in the first round at Wimbledon in June.

He has sought to fully banish those memories with two excellent performances to make the semi-finals, despite making his debut here and being the youngest competitor in the field.

Having beaten the number four seed Daniil Medvedev for the first time ever in a tense battle on Monday, his second round robin match with Alexander Zverev on Wednesday was expected to be an equally close affair.

In the end though, it proved to be comparatively easy for the young Greek. With Zverev continuing to serve hold, Tsitsipas had to work hard to hold his serve in the fifth game of the set, but eventually prevailed, and took advantage of unforced errors by the German three games later to break,. He then won eleven out of the next thirteen points to clinch the first set.

He broke the Zverev serve at the start of the second set, and then fashioned a second break four games later as he cruised to victory, notching his third win of the year over the German.

Nadal v Tsitsipas Predictions & Tips

Nadal is the favourite to win this match at 8/15, whilst Tsitsipas is priced at 6/4. By the time this match is played, the Spaniard’s fate could already be decided. If Alexander Zverev beats Daniil Medvedev in the other match in the group, then Nadal will be eliminated, whatever happens in this match.

However, even if that is the case, a win should still be enough to guarantee him the world number one ranking going into the winter break, so that will be motivation enough for him. For his part, Tsitsipas is already assured of his place in the semi-finals so he can relax and enjoy the match.
