De Minaur, Untroubled so far in Madrid

The runner-up in the Next Gen ATP Final to Jannik Sinner of Italy, de Minaur has found it all plain sailing so far in Madrid,

In Australia’s opening group match he was pitted against the world number 193 Daniel Galan of Columbia, a man who took David Goffin of Belgium to three sets in the opening Group D match on Monday. However, Galan was brushed aside in little more than an hour, as de Minaur one in straight sets for the loss of just five games.

And, then, in his next match, it was his turn to face Goffin. He breezed through the first set in just 26 games, with the Belgian unable to win a game against his powerful returns from the back of the court.  The second set was tighter and, after de Minaur established an advantage with an early break, Goffin broke back to force a tie break. However, the Australian then was able to close out the match to record his 40th singles win of the year.

Shapovalov, Continuing His End of Season Form in Madrid

Shapovalov came into these finals in arguably his best form of the season, having reached the final of the Paris Masters, and, two weeks prior to that, finally winning his first ever ATP singles tournament, the Stockholm Open.

And he has continued to show he is in that sort of form, beating the world number 8 Matteo Berrettini of Italy in Canada’s opening group match, in a thriller that lasted almost three hours. and which was decided in a third set tie-breaker. It was his fourth ever win against a player ranked in the top ten.

He then followed up the victory with a straight sets win over Taylor Fritz, as his country recorded their first ever victory in the Davis Cup over the United States.
