Serbia v Russia Predictions & Preview
Serbia, led by world number two Novak Djokovic topped Group A and play Russia, who were one of two runner-ups in the group stages to make the quarter-finals here in Madrid.
Both Novak Djokovic and Filip Krajinovic have been in good form in their singles matches against Japan and France and been duly supported by the doubles pair of Viktor Troicki and the retiring Janko Tipsarevic.
In the absence of Russian number one Daniil Medvedev, the onus has been on Andrey Rublev and Karen Khachanov who did well to defeat Croatia, but fell short against a very strong Spanish side led by Rafael Nadal.
With Djokovic expected to win his singles encounter, where he will likely be facing Khachanov, the focus shifts to Rublev who will probably be playing the other singles and the doubles. Rublev has been in phenomenal form for most of the second half of the season, and will start as a strong favorite against Krajinovic, leaving the doubles as they key decider here. With Khachanov and Rublev having performed singles and doubles duties in both group stage ties, it is doubtful whether the Russian thinktank will call upon Evgeny Donskoy for a crucial encounter like this.
Expect the doubles to go either way, but the Serbs will have the more rested bodies and fresher pair of legs for the doubles, given the allocation of roles among them versus the Russians. As a result, Serbia to inch through and qualify for the semi-finals on Saturday.

Argentina v Spain Predictions & Preview
Spain led by world number one Rafael Nadal topped their group and meet Argentina in the quarter-finals who were the second of the runners-up to qualify for the last eight.
The Spaniards have been in ominous form defeating holders Croatia (3-0) and the mighty Russians (2-1) and looking to continue the strong run of play in the knockout stages. With Nadal having been in invincible form in his two singles matches, he was aptly supported by Roberto Bautista Agut in the singles, with doubles assistance coming from Feliciano Lopez and Marcel Granollers. With Agut having to leave the tournament with the unfortunate demise of his father, it is likely that Pablo Carreno Busta will replace him in the singles for the rest of the tournament.
It has been a roller-coaster ride for Argentina who beat Chile 3-0, but lost to Germany 0-3 in the group stages. The singles matches have seen Diego Schwartzman and Guido Pella, with Maximo Gonzalez and Leonardo Mayer completing the doubles pairing. The presence of Juan Martin del Potro in a team event such as this has been duly missed.
Given the form that he has been in, one can expect Nadal to emerge victorious against Schwartzman, his likely opponent. Both Pella and Carreno Busta have been in up and down form of late, but given Pella has already played this week, he will likely be better adjusted to the conditions and surface. Despite the singles match between Pella and Carreno Busta being one that is difficult to pick, Spain’s doubles team playing at home definitely has the upper hand in that encounter. Expect Spain to qualify for the semi-finals with some degree of comfort.

Germany v Great Britain Predictions & Preview
Group E winners and ten time Davis Cup champions Great Britain play Group C winners Germany in the last of the quarter-finals at Madrid.
Solid performances by Jamie Murray and his doubles partner Neal Skupski has made up in both group matches for British number one Dan Evans, who is still searching for his first win of the week. Former world number one Andy Murray returning from injury had to play with his back against the wall to make an unexpected comeback to win his singles match against Tallon Griekspoor of the Netherlands. He was rested in the tie against Kazakhstan where Britain’s Kyle Edmund put up a stellar dislay to defeat Mikhail Kukushkin.
In the absence of their number one player Alexander Zverev, the Germans have looked in good form with Phil Kohlschreiber winning both his singles matches and their doubles pair of Kevin Krawietz and Andreas Mies being unbeaten too, after a dramatic win against the Argentinians. German number one ranked player at the Davis Cup Jan-Lennard Struff dropped the only match so far against Chilean Cristain Garrin, but can be expected to be a tough opponent for the Britons on Friday.
A very evenly matched tie between Britain and Germany is on the cards, where Kyle Edmund and Andy Murray can be expected to represent in the singles, though there has been some uncertainty around Murray’s participation on Friday. With the experienced Jamie Murray a slight favorite in the doubles, the two singles matches become hard to pick. Given the recent run of form, Struff can be expected to emerge over Edmund, and when it comes down to a knockout game, there is no better person than Andy Murray to take you across the finish line.
