Martina Hingis knows a thing or two about winning Grand Slam titles and she reckons Roger Federer’s final defeat at the hands of Novak Djokovic will take some getting over. However, she has backed her countryman to add to his 20 major titles.
Federer was the runner-up at the 2019 Wimbledon despite having two Championships points under his belt against Djokovic but he fluffed his lines and the Serb added to his list of Grand Slams. As a result, Federer won no majors last year but still goes into Wimbledon 2020 at 4/1 (with Bet365) just behind Djokovic.
What Hingis thinks could go in Federer’s favour in case they meet again at Wimbledon, or for that matter at any other Grand Slam, is that the Swiss maestro has had his revenge after that. Federer brushed Djokovic aside in the ATP Finals to knock the Serb out of the tournament before he made the semifinals.

What that means is despite not winning a Grand Slam since the 2018 Australian Open, Federer still stands a chance to push on and add to his tally according to Hingis.
Hingis said:
“He must still think about it [the Wimbledon 2019 final] sometimes, I would. Probably. He’s had his revenge kind of now, he still sort of knows he can maybe beat him. Sometimes that mentally helps. But I think he’s still one of the favourites, especially at Wimbledon I would say.”
Djokovic himself has run into bit of a form rut by his own lofty standards, having faced fitness issues in his early loss at the US Open while not qualifying for the knockout rounds of the ATP Finals. He is still a supreme favourite to defend his title with bet365 offering 6/4 for a Wimbledon 2020 triumph.
However, Federer and Djokovic – and for that matter even Rafael Nadal – will now have more challenges from the next-gen of players. These players, namely Dominic Thiem, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev showed enough fire in the whole of 2019 to give an indicator of what could follow in 2020 – tough times for the Big Three.
There has already been a talk about how 2020 could see a new world number one, with Thiem leading the way for now given his much-improved game on hard court surfaces to go with his solid clay court performances. Things might not be getting any easier for Federer as a result and that was perfectly summed up by Hingis in one line.
“Sometimes it’s just brutal. Tennis as a sport can be very mean and brutal.”
