Tennis News Today: Seats Added for Federer-Nadal Exhibition in Cape Town

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer will play an exhibition match on February 7 next year in Cape Town, South Africa. The match will be played in the Cape Town Stadium which has the capacity of seating almost 50,000 people with more than two thousand seats being added.

The “Roger Federer v Rafael Nadal Match In Africa” will also feature a doubles match between Roger Federer and Bill Gates and Rafael Nadal and Trevor Noah.

To make it as accessible as possible for fans and with overwhelming demand, an additional 2670 seats will be added to the venue. This will also be an attempt to set a world record for the most number of spectators watching a tennis match.

The current record for the most spectators at a match is 42,517 at an exhibition match between Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev in Mexico.

The capacity of the Cape Town Stadium, now extended, is sure to break the record once again. These additional tickets have gone on sale and will be allotted through a ballot system. 

In anticipation of the event, Federer said:

“This is a dream come true. I will play in my mother’s home country against my toughest rival and friend Rafa Nadal. We share not only the love for tennis but also for the good cause of giving children a better start in education and in life.”

“I feel privileged to have other leading philanthropists on board to entertain millions of people in the stadium and on TV. It will be a once-in-a-lifetime moment for my family and me.”

The event’s profits will be towards the cause of children’s education in rural areas through the Roger Federer Foundation. 

The sixth edition for this wonderful cause, this will be the first edition to be held in Africa. The first Match for Africa was held in Switzerland. This exhibition match partnered with Nadal’s foundation Fundación Rafa Nadal in Spain. It was jointly titled “Joining Forces for the Benefit of Children.

The second and third editions of the same were held in Switzerland. The fourth edition was played in Seattle in the United States featuring a doubles match with a celebrity partner. Bill Gates was Federer’s partner. The next edition was played in San Jose at the SAP Center and raised 2.5 million dollars for the foundation. The foundation currently involves 309,000 children as a part of their running programmes.

Federer will team up with Bill Gates once again as they face off against Nadal and comedian Trevor Noah on February 7, 2020.
