Rafael Nadal v Karen Khachanov Head to Head

In what has been a one-sided rivalry, Nadal and Khachanov have played each other seven times in their careers and the Spaniard has won every single time. Interestingly, they have played these matches in a span of two years between 2017 and 2019, and Khachanov has won just one set. Yep, that’s right, just one set.

Their last meeting came in Davis Cup 2019, as recently as last month and Nadal was a 6-3, 7-6 winner.

Nadal Kick-Starts his Pre-Season Warmup

Since losing to Alexander Zverev in his opening match of the ATP Finals, Nadal has won seven in a row including two at that very tournament and five victories en route Spain’s Davis Cup victory. In none of those five wins, Nadal even dropped a set, making it a grand end to a season that had seen him win two Grand Slam titles and the Montreal and Rome Masters wins.

Lot of eyes will be on Nadal, especially because of his injury issues in recent times but also more so because he’s now just one Grand Slam short of Roger Federer’s 20 titles. His showing at the Australian Open hasn’t been the best – among his exploits that is – but counting him out as one of the favourites at the Australian Open will be difficult after his showing at Flushing Meadows.

All that’s for later though. For now, Nadal will be gunning for a smooth win over his Russian win to set up what could be another interesting encounter against either Novak Djokovic or Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Khachanov Hoping to Turn Things Around

For a player who won three ATP titles in 2018 including his maiden Masters win, and moved into the top 10 of the rankings, a lot more was expected than what was delivered in 2019. In fact, a 33-31 win-loss record can, at best, be described as average for most players but for a top-10 talent, that was below-par.

Khachanov has begun his new season with a win though and that should pep him a bit. Hyeon Chung, who was one of the players who came in for the injured duo of Gael Monfils and Daniil Medvedev here at Mubadala, was shown the door by Khachanov, who won 7-6, 6-4 in the quarterfinals.

However, he now faces Nadal, a player he had failed to beat even at the peak of his abilities in 2018 – losing to him thrice that year including once at US Open and a couple of other times at Masters events.

Nadal v Khachanov Predictions & Tips
