Novak Djokovic v Karen Khachanov Head to Head

This will be the fifth match between Djokovic and Khachanov and the Serb leads the head to head 3-1. Khachanov’s only win over Djokovic came at the 2018 Paris Masters, a tournament he won by beating Djokovic in the final. Interestingly, Djokovic had played and beaten Khachanov in the previous Mubadala competition as well.

Djokovic Could be Reeling from Loss to Tsitsipas

This is an exhibition tournament, the purpose is to get into shape for the season ahead. But even with that in mind, Djokovic won’t be happy with his showing against a rival expected to dethrone him from the perch in the future.

In what was their fifth meeting, Tsitsipas registered his third win over Djokovic, and what made it worse for the world number two was he was leading by a set. Djokovic did suffer an early break in the second set but came back well to force it into a tie-breaker only to waste an opportunity to finish it off in straight sets.

Now, Djokovic takes on a rival he should get better of but more important would be how he does that. Can he exhibit the ruthlessness from the Djokovic of old, or will he endure some more struggle. Either way, the season-opening loss to Tsitsipas might give few of Djokovic’s opponents some hope, it’s just that there have been too many false dawns for the Next-Gen in the past.

Khachanov Suffers Rollicking Loss to Nadal

The Russian was a straight-set winner over Hyeon Chung but always knew playing a fully-fit Rafael Nadal was going to be a different kettle of fish. And it turned out exactly like that.

Nadal taught him a lesson he would love to learn from and improve, winning 6-1, 6-3. For someone who had won three titles in 2018 but struggled through the 2019 season, it was a match which threw an unfavourable light on him if he wants to break into the top 10.

And now, for the second day in a row, he will have a chance to showcase to the world, that is a reasonable goal. Defeating Djokovic would be tough enough but going down in a heap like he did to Nadal won’t inspire too much confidence. Big question is whether Khachanov can take advantage of any vulnerability shown by the Serb.

Djokovic v Khachanov Predictions & Tips

Djokovic was 4/11 to beat Tsitsipas in the semifinal and lost. He is a whopping 1/5 in this match against Khachanov and should be our favourite too. Except it’s tough to find value in those kind of odds, which is why looking at the over/under games market. Reckon it might still be a straight-set win but with some fight from Khachanov.

Tip: Over 19.5 games in the match: 8/11 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
