Former US Open champion, Samantha Stosur’s advice for world no.1 Ashleigh Barty is to not to look to please anyone else.
Ahead of the first Grand Slam of the season, emotions run high the current best player, Ashleigh Barty returns home to Australia to claim her nation’s major title.
In the past 41 years, no Australian has ever won the title and the nation will look towards the Roland Garros champion to end the dry spell.
As the top-ranked tennis female player in Australia for an incredible 452 consecutive weeks, Stosur gave some important advice for the young player to achieve what she hoped for. Under a lot of pressure as the first Australian to be ranked first in the world since 1977, Stosur is sure that Barty is capable of handling the pressure.
Her made advice to Barty is to put herself first, over other’s expectations and to play to her best capability.

Stosur is hopeful that Barty can defy the odds of top-seeded women winning at the tournament and achieve something great at Melbourne Park the coming year. She said:
“She would never have dreamed of winning the French Open so once we’ve seen that she’s capable of doing that, god, who knows what she’s going to be able to do for the rest of her career. She’s still young and obviously has the ability to do great things.”
At the last Australian Open, Barty managed to make it to the quarterfinals where she suffered defeat at the hands of eight seed Petra Kvitova who managed to reach the finals.
Subsequently, Barty had a great year progressing from being ranked 15 to world no.1 towards the year-end.
Barty won the Miami Open, the French Open, the Birmingham Classic and the year-end WTA Finals. She also reached the finals at the China Open and Sydney International.
Having proven how well she can play in the Australian conditions, which is an important factor as former world no.4 Stosur admitted to her struggle in playing there, Barty brings with her the dream of an Australian lifting the trophy after 41 years.
