Jan-Lennard Struff v Nick Kyrgios Head to Head

The pair have met twice on tour so far. The Australian won their first-ever clash at the 2018 Davis Cup, whereas the German prevailed on the clay courts of Madrid Masters last year.

Will Struff to Continue to Prioritise Doubles This Year?

The 29-year-old German has not been outside of the top 70 in the world singles rankings for the past three seasons. But at the same time, his focus priority in the last two years has clearly been playing in the doubles. He has played in 40 & 65 matches in the doubles circuit in the previous two seasons, his highest two years since turning professional. At the same time, he has played 71 & 58 matches in singles, his lowest two years since 2010.

Most of his success in singles have come on the clay courts. After an average start to the season last year, he performed admirably during the clay swing previous year. He reached the last eight at Barcelona Open, eventually losing to Rafael Nadal. He also made it to the fourth round of the French Open before losing to Novak Djokovic.

Standing at 6’4″, the German has a powerful serve and backhand. On his day, he can be more than a match for any player on tour. It was evident by the fact that he beat some big names like Stefanos Tsitsipas (twice), Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, Alexander Zverev, and David Goffin last year.

Kyrgios Looking to Overcome Injury Woes

The 24-year-old Australian is coming off a collarbone injury, which forced him to sit out of the Laver Cup & then the Davis Cup. Despite the public backing from Australian captain Lleyton Hewitt that he will be ready for the event, the doubts with regards to his fitness remain.

Kyrigios was world number 13 just two years ago. And has impressive head to head record against the likes of Nadal & Djokovic. But his frequent run-ins with his opponents and officials coupled with poor conduct off the field has blighted his progress. He was banned for 16 weeks last season from the tour for his persistent unsportsmanlike conduct. That pretty much ended his season in which he had won two ATP 500 titles.

But as Hewitt has mentioned recently that Kyrgios has been in a good mental space since his comeback, he will be looking to start afresh this year and finally do justice to the enormous talent that he possesses.

Jan-Lennard Struff v Nick Kyrgios Predictions & Tips

Rankings wise, there is not much between the two players. But despite all the controversies & concerns about Kyrgios, he goes into the match as a firm favorite. The Australian has an extremely aggressive game coupled with a consistent serve and more than a decent net game.

Struff, on the other hand, doesn’t have the best of the records on the hard courts. Kyrgios should win this one easily, boosting Australia’s chances of making it to the final stages of the tournament in front of the home crowd.

Tip: Kyrgios to win in straight sets: 11/10 (Click here to get these odds with bet365)
