Daniil Medvedev v John Isner Head to Head

These have never met faced each other on tour. This will be the first clash between the two.

Medvedev Looked In-form Despite Dropping a Set Against Fognini

Ever since the Russian broke into the top 100 in late 2016, he hasn’t seen his rankings fall more than 19 spots in a single week. For someone so young, this is a testament to his consistency and shows how well he has adapted to the grind of playing at the highest level.

Most promising young players tend to suffer from the weight of expectations as well as getting found out after their breakthrough year. But Medvedev has impressed one and all with his rise and now stands as one of the favorites to be the first time Grand Slam champion in the 2020 season.

He won four titles last year and reached the finals at five more events. One of those finals was at the US Open, where he took Rafael Nadal to five sets before succumbing. He went on a purple patch from Montreal Masters to Shanghai Masters, where he won 25 out of 27 matches over two months. On both the occasions he lost, his opponent was Nadal.

In the first match of the tournament he won against Fabio Fognini of Italy in a tough three-setter. The Russian looked rusty in the first set as Fognini came out flying from the block. After losing the first set, Medvedev found his rhythm and won the next two sets comfortably.

Isner Looking for a Fresh Start After Injury Hit 2019

34-year-old American’s 2019 started with some impressive set of results. He reached three consecutive semifinals in New York, Deray Beach, and Acapulco. His season’s best tournament was at Miami Masters, where he was the defending champion.

He reached the finals, winning five matches in straight sets but sustained a back injury while playing against Roger Federer in the final. After losing that match, he was out for more than three months before finally making a return. He did win his only title of the year quickly upon his return at Newport.

But since then, his performances lacked consistency, and his season never really got going again. He played in 11 tournaments without reaching the last four in any of them. Currently ranked 19th in the rankings, Isner lost to Rudd Casper of Norway in the first match of the tournament. He will be looking to bounce back quickly after a tough three-set loss.

Daniil Medvedev v John Isner Predictions & Tips

Both players prefer hard courts the most. Strong serve and aggressive forehand are the weapons that both of them rely heavily on upon. Isner on his day can give the best of the players a run for their money. But it’s difficult to look past the Russian in this match. The performances from both the players in their first match strengthen this point. Isner still looked tentative and a little off the pace, whereas Medvedev looked his imperious best in the last two sets.

Tip: Medvedev to win in straight sets: 11/10 (Click here to get these odds with bet365)
