Caroline Wozniacki v Paige Hourigan Head to Head

This is a first-ever meeting between the pair.

Wozniacki Set for Auckland Swansong

Caroline Wozniacki announced her retirement from professional tennis at the back end of last year, and she will play her final tournament at the 2020 Australian Open – the scene of her maiden and thus far only Grand Slam singles title in her career.

The Dane will play in the penultimate tournament of her career which is of course the ASB Classic in Auckland in both singles and doubles draw. She will team up with Serena Williams for doubles action on Monday in order to prepare for a successful farewell from the game.

Just two years ago, Wozniacki finished runner-up in Auckland and was ranked No.2 in the world heading to Australian Open. She surprisingly won the Daphne Akhurst Memorial trophy in Melbourne and rose to World No.1 for the first time since 2011.

However, injuries coupled with her desire to start a family have pushed her to make the decision to retire. A decision she says she made at the right time. Who could argue? Wozniacki is a veteran in the women’s game and won 30 singles titles. She peaked at No.1, garnering a total of 71 weeks at the summit. She will dare to dream and sign off with a major tournament win in a couple of weeks time, but there is still the extra incentive to win in Auckland as well.

Little Known Hourigan is New Zealand’s finest

Paige Hourigan is a name most tennis fans (myself included) had never heard of until the draw of the ASB Classic was released. Ranked 438 in the world, Hourigan is the highest-ranked New Zealand tennis player in the women’s game at the moment. She earned her place in the draw after being a recipient of a second wildcard from the tournament director Karl Budge.

Hourigan’s major accolades from 2019 was winning the ITF $15,000 tournament in Mexico in March and getting to the semifinals of the ITF $25,000 in Singapore in May.

Their is an unfathomable gulf in experience and class as the 22-year-old Hourigan will make her maiden WTA main draw appearance, while Wozniacki has averaged at least one title per season between 2008 to 2018.

Caroline Wozniacki v Paige Hourigan Predictions & Tips

It would be the biggest shock of the 2020 WTA season if Hourigan can pull off an upset win. One thing the wildcard can count on is the home support, but Wozniacki who is laser-focused to end her career on a high won’t want to be remembered for losing to a World No.438.
