Dominic Thiem v Hubert Hurkacz Head to Head
The pair have played each other once before, in the first round of the Miami Masters last year, with Thiem winning in straight sets.
Thiem Recovers from Opening Setback
Thiem suffered a setback in his first match in Sydney on Saturday, losing in three sets to a resurgent Borna Coric, as his Austrian team were whitewashed by the Croats.
It was, therefore, imperative both for him and his team, that he got back to winning ways on Monday, and he duly did, beating Diego Schwartzman of Argentina in straight sets, although the world number 14 did not make it easy for him especially in the second set which went to a tie-break.
Now he knows that, for his team to progress to the knock-out stages, he has to beat Hurkacz on Wednesday, and hope his compatriot Dennis Novak can do the same against Kamil Majchrzak.
Hurkacz Building on 2019 Form in Sydney
Hurkacz, the world number 33, was one of the most improved players on tour last year, and reaped the reward for his hard work by winning his maiden ATP singles title at Winston Salem in the United States.
And he has begun his 2020 in style, winning both of his singles matches in the ATP Cup so far.
he began with a comeback win over the world number 14, Diego Schwartzman of Argentina, fighting back from a set down to clinch the match in the third. And then he beat Borna Coric of Croatia, who had defeated Thiem in his first match, in convincing fashion, winning in straight sets for the loss of just four games, and completely dominating on service.
Unfortunately, he has not been able to carry his form onto the doubles court with partner Lucasz Kubel. They have lost both of their matches, meaning Poland’s chances of further progress in the event hang by a thread.

Hurkacz has done very well in Australia so far, and has picked up where he left off last season. However, Thiem is an experienced campaigner, and, despite his first match setback, will start favourite to win, knowing it is vital to his team’s chances of progressing further in the competition that he does so.
