Rafael Nadal v Yoshihito Nishioka Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, in the quarter finals of Acapulco in 2017, with Nadal winning on that occasion in straight sets.

Nadal Hoping to Add ATP Cup to Trophy Cabinet

Nadal has been typically efficient in Australia over the past week, beating Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia in his first match, and then comprehensively defeating Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay.

And with Spain now certain to progress from Group B, he will already be hoping that he can have another team trophy to put in his cabinet, alongside the Davis Cup he helped Spain win last November in front of their home fans in Madrid. Not to mention, the US Open he won earlier in 2019.

Ominously for his main rivals as well, he looks fit and in fine form ahead of the Australian Open which starts in two weeks’ time.

Nishioka Defying His Ranking in Australia

Nishioka, the world number 75, who is leading the Japanese team in the absence of the injured Kei Nishikori, has defied the odds to win both his singles matches so far in this event. He had earlier reminded the media in a press conference last year, he wasn’t Nishikori, but Nishioka. He has certainly played like his more pedigreed countryman this tournament.

He began with a ruthless display against Pablo Cuevas of Uruguay, the world number 44, dropping just one game in a match that lasted just 54 minutes.

He started the underdog again in his next match against Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia, a man ranked nearly 50 places above him in the ATP world standings, but defied the odds to win in straight sets, dominant when it came to return of serve and ability to convert break points.

Rafael Nadal v Yoshihito Nishioka Predictions & Tips

Nishioka may have won his first two singles matches in this tournament, but Nadal represents a considerable step-up in class when it comes to calibre of opponent, and it would be a major turn-up if this were anything but a routine win for the Spaniard.
