Belinda Bencic v Anna Blinkova Head to Head

This is a first-ever meeting between the pair.

Will Bencic Pick Up where She Left off in 2020?

Much of the WTA 2020 season will revolve around the progress by the likes of Bianca Andreescu and Naomi Osaka. Serena Williams’ chase for a record-equaling 24th major title will also be the center of attention. But Belinda Bencic’s potential of thwarting all those stories might not be under the microscope for the moment.

It is perhaps understandable for a player who had the misfortune of injury and caught the under-performing bug that many rising WTA players suffer during the teenage years. Desperation and pressure kept Bencic in the loop and after wining the battle from injuries, she was voted as WTA’s Comeback player of the year in 2019, thanks largely to her brilliant form and fitness.

Bencic finished the year in the top-10 for the first time in her career, winning two titles, garnering 11 top-10 wins and earning a place at the season-ending WTA Finals in Shenzhen. Overall, the Swiss woman compiled a 50-22 record for the year – a career-best for Bencic. Her clean ball striking coupled with her willingness to take the ball early saw her dominate matches against the top ranked players. She beat Naomi Osaka and Petra Kvitova twice in 2019.

Will she carry that form to 2020?

Blinkova is at Career-High Ranking in 2020

Anna Blinkova has spent most of her teenage years painstakingly building up her ranking playing a mix of both WTA and ITF events. It is at the latter where Blinkova has enjoyed most of her success claiming a title in New Haven at the Oracle Challenger Series last September.

At tour-level, the Russian reached a pair of semifinals in 2019 in Guangzhou and Luxembourg Open respectively. Her last-four appearance in Linz was special as she beat rising American Coco Gauff in straight sets in the first round.

At 21, Blinkova is certainly a name to keep an eye on especially if she can climb up the rankings and avoid the  burden of playing qualifying matches at major tournaments. But can she put the cat among the pigeons in Shenzhen and knock out the top seed?

Belinda Bencic v Anna Blinkova Predictions & Tips
