Ashleigh Barty v Jennifer Brady Head to Head

The two have met on two previous occasions, both of which were played last year, with the Australian winning the contests with ease in straight sets.

Can Barty carry the momentum of 2019 to 2020?

2019 was one year that Ash Barty would like to carry with her all her life. It was a dream year for the 23-year-old former cricketer turned tennis star, which saw her claim her first Grand Slam (the French Open), her first Premier Mandatory title (the Miami Open), her first WTA finals title and finish the year with four trophies, which included the Birmingham Classic.

To top it all she finished the season as the year-end World No. 1 and claimed the prestigious WTA Player of the Year award, becoming the first Aussie to receive the honour.

Apart from her four titles, Barty also reached the final of Sydney International and the China Open last year in what was her best season on court so far.

Having reached her first quarterfinal at the Australian Open last year, expectations from Barty will be pretty high this season and the right-handed all-court player will hope to live up to those expectations with a good showing at home. And the challenge begins in Brisbane on Thursday.

But her first outing will be a tricky one against Jennifer Brady, who defeated Maria Sharapova in a tough three-setter on Tuesday.

Brady Holds Nerves to beat Sharapova

For Brady, 2020 has got off to a great start. The qualifier who came into the main draw with three straight set wins, came from behind to win against the Russian in a dramatic contest that lasted 2 hours and 14 minutes.

The five-time Grand Slam champion Sharapova, playing for the first time since the U.S. Open, started off brightly taking the first set 3-6, but the 53rd rank American brought out her A-game in the second, rallying to take the set 6-1 without a single unforced error. The third set went into the tie-break and in the end it was Sharapova’s struggles with her serve that cost her the match. The Russian committed 11 double faults, including 5 in the final set, compared to the American’s one in the entire match.

With momentum with Brady, the American would like to test the Aussie on her home turf.

The World No. 1 should show no signs of rust as she is already featuring in the doubles event with Kiki Bertens and will play the doubles quarterfinal on Wednesday.
