Karolina Pliskova v Ajla Tomljanovic Head to Head
This will be the sixth meeting between Karolina Pliskova and Ajla Tomljanovic with the Czech world number two leading 4-1 so far. It is 4-0 for Pliskova over their last four matches with the Aussie’s only win having come in their first meeting way back in 2011. They played thrice in 2019, including once in Brisbane last year where Pliskova won 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 to make the semifinal.
Pliskova Begins Title Defence on Thursday
Defending Brisbane International champion Pliskova had an excellent 2019 season on paper but her Grand Slam form continues to remain a worry. That said, most players would take the kind of record that Pliskova has garnered over the past three or so seasons, including a 52-17 win-loss record last year.
This included four of her 15 career titles which came in 2019, across three different surfaces. Two of them came on hard courts as apart from Brisbane, she also won the Zhenzhou title. However, despite the kind of season that Pliskova had, she dissolved her coaching relationship with Conchita Martinez and hired Daniel Vallverdu as her new coach.
Whether that will make any positive influence on her with respect to her chances in majors remains to be seen but for now there are other pressing matters on hand. Like the defence of her title in a tournament which has other top players like Ash Barty and Naomi Osaka in with a chance to play her at latter stages of the competition.
First things first, and it’s Tomljanovic waiting for her in this season-opener.
Tomljanovic Overcomes Hon for Starters
A quarterfinalist at the Brisbane International last season before she went down to Pliskova, this will be Tomljanovic’s chance at avenging that defeat. However, as one would expect, it wouldn’t be easy for the 54th-ranked Aussie to down Pliskova.
Having started the pre-season with an exhibition match against Maria Sharapova which Tomljanovic lost in straight sets, there was some indication of a fight in that one. She was up against fellow Aussie Priscilla Hon in her opener, she did drop a set but came through to set up this meeting with Pliskova.
Tomljanovic is coming off an under-par season in 2019 though. She won only 31 matches to her 30 losses and made it to just one WTA tournament final. There were two other semifinals, among which she was stopped in her tracks at Zhenzhou by Pliskova again and it’s tough to see a different result for this either.
