Naomi Osaka v Sofia Kenin Head to Head

Three matches have been played between these two players with Kenin leading 2-1. One of the matches Kenin won came at the ITF level tennis tournaments back in 2014, before Osaka had her revenge at the 2018 French Open when she won in straight sets in the first round. More recently, Kenin was leading Osaka 2-0 in the final set at the Cincinnati Open last season when the Japanese player retired from the match.

Naomi Osaka Looking to Extend Winning Streak

After winning the Australian Open last season, Naomi Osaka seemed to have gone off the boil with her performances and it looked like some off-court issues were bothering her as well.

However, towards the second half of the 2019 season, the fun looked to have returned in her tennis as she first reached the fourth round at the US Open and then went on a 11-match winning streak to end the season.

This included two title wins at Osaka and Beijing and an opening WTA Finals victory against Petra Kvitova before she withdrew from the tournament because of a fitness issue. She then returned back in this tournament in Brisbane to only be pushed to three sets by Maria Sakkari.

Osaka came through the grinding match which makes it 12 wins in a row for her since that US Open triumph and she would be gunning for her 13th here. Up against her, however, a woman in some form of her own.

Kenin Eases Past Sevastova

2019 can safely be called the season when Sofia Kenin arrived on the big stage. Sure she has been around since 2016 but last year, she won three WTA titles, starting with the Hobart International, and followed by Mallorca and Guangzhou through the year. She finished the year with a 49-23 win-loss record and after touching a career-best ranking of 12th in the world, she settled in at 14th by the season end.

As a consequence of that, Kenin was awarded WTA’s Most Improved Player prize in 2019, after having started the season at 39th in the world.

Kenin started off the 2020 season with a straight-set win over Anastasija Sevastova, a dangerous opponent in her own right and will now be hoping to come out with flying colours against one of the most fancied players in the world.
