Novak Djokovic v Daniil Medvedev Head to Head

The pair have played each other five times before, with Djokovic leading their personal series by three matches to two. Three of those matches came last year, Djokovic winning at the Australian Open, but Medvedev claiming victory at the Masters events in Monte Carlo and Cincinnati.

Medvedev Ready for Epic Challenge

The top ranked Russian has led by example this week, taking responsibility for playing the tougher opponents in all the ties that Russia have faced to date, starting with Fabio Fognini of Italy in his opening match, dropping the first set to the world number 12 before hitting back to clinch the next two.

John Isner of the United States was brushed side, beaten in straight sets for the loss of just four games, and Casper Ruud of Norway, although offering a stiffer challenge, was also beaten in straight sets.

John Isner of the United States was beaten easily though, Medvedev winning in straight sets for the loss of just four games, and, although Casper Ruud of Norway put up more of a fight, he too was beaten in straight sets.

His quarter final with Diego Schwartzman was altogether a different affair, and it took three sets and nearly two and a half hours on court before he was able to get the better of the Argentine.

The one stain on his otherwise unbeaten record so far came in the doubles. Together with Karen Khachanov, they beat the Italian pair of Simone Bolelli and Paolo Lorenzo, but then lost to the Americans Austin Krajicek and Rajeer Ram, although Russia still won the tie overall.

Since then Russia have relied on the pairing of Teymuraz Gabashvili and Konstantin Kravchuk in the doubles.

Djokovic Pushed All The Way by Shapovalov

Djokovic went into his quarter-final tie with Denis Shapovalov with a perfect record in Australia to that point, having beaten Kevin Anderson of South Africa, Gael Monfils of France, and Christian Garin of Chile in the group stages without dropping a single set.

Yet he faced an almighty struggle to beat the Canadian, especially when his serve was broken in the penultimate game of the first set by Shapovalov, who then served out to establish an early advantage. Djokovic raised his game and hit back in the second, converting all three of the break opportunities he created, to level the match.

And, at 5-4 and 30-0 on his own serve, he seemed to have the match in control when play was interrupted when a spectator became ill. The interruption broke his concentration, and Shapovalov hit back to even the match up again. In the subsequent tie-break Shapovalov saved four match points, before finally he committed the error which handed the victory to the Serb.

Daniil Medvedev v Novak Djokovic Predictions & Tips

Whilst Medvedev has won both of their last two matches, this is likely to be a very tight battle, and may well serve as a dress rehearsal for more contests to come between these two men in the latter stages of tournaments throughout the season.  Djokovic is tipped to win by dint of the fact that the match is being played in Australia, a country in which the Serb has such a good record.
