Naomi Osaka v Karolina Pliskova Head to Head

The pair have played each other four times. and the current head to head series stands at two wins each. Pliskova won their first two meetings at the Masters events in Canada in 2017, and Indian Wells a year later, but Osaka won their two matches, in Tokyo the same year, and at the Australian Open last year.

Osaka, Improving Her Ranking in Brisbane

Osaka has by no means made it easy for herself so far in Brisbane, and has had to dig deep to win every match in which she has taken part.

Her run began with a match against the Greek Maria Sakkari, who took her to three sets, as did her second round opponent, the American Sofia Kenin, Osaka having to come from behind having dropped the first set.

She then had yet another three set battle with the number six seed, Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands, which saw the pair trade sets, until the first game of the third set which proved to be something of a  turning point. Lasting eleven minutes, Osaka saved three break points, eventually winning it to take the lead in the set. She then broke serve in the sixth game and closed out the match thanks to an unforced error from Bertens on match point.

Her win enable her to leap-frog Simona Halep in the WTA rankings, and she is now the new number three.

Pliskova, Playing One of Her Favourite Events

Pliskova enjoys playing in Brisbane – she won the event in 2017, again last year, and her record, going into her semi-final with Osaka, in the tournament is 15-3.

Given a bye in the first round this time, she played local favourite Ajla Tomljanovic, dropping the second set to the Australian, before powering away with the third.

Her quarter final with Alison Riske of the United States, saw Pliskova save two set points in the opener, before she clinched it on a tie break, but she broke early in the second set, and again several games later, to cruise into yet another semi-final here.

Naomi Osaka v Karolina Pliskova Predictions & Tips

There is a lot at stake for both players in this match – not only are they competing for a place in the final, but also to decide who will be the world number two player, and seeded as such for the Australian Open in ten days’ time. Pliskova is the woman in possession right now, but, if Osaka wins, she will deprive the Czech of that status. The last time they met in Australia it was Osaka who won their semi-final in Melbourne, but this is Brisbane, and a tournament in which Pliskova always performs.

Tip: Pliskova to win in three sets: 7/2 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
