Serena Williams v Jessica Pegula Head to Head

This will be the first time that Serena Williams takes on Jessica Pegula in a competitive match at the highest level.

Williams Blitzes into Auckland Final

If there were any doubts about the tennis class of Serena Williams, she dispelled it all by routing Amanda Anisimova in the semifinal. Anisimova has shown enough talent to test some of the top players in the world but against Williams she capitulated quickly.

Serena needed just 43 minutes to overcome the fellow American, breaking her opponent five times. Incidentally Serena won just five break-points, and converted it all, while facing just one which she saved. The American also smashed 17 winners and the lack of unforced errors – just six of them – ensured she faced no issues whatsoever.

This was after Serena was pushed only by Christina McHale, which was in the second round following which cruised past Laura Siegemund in the quarterfinal. Now, she faces an unseeded, 25-year-old Pegula as she looks to warm up for the Australian Open with a title in Auckland…

…But Can Pegula Upset the Apple-Cart?

Pegula was ranked 624th in the world at the start of the 2018 season and reached a career-high of 55th mid last season. This was on the back of her performances at the ITF circuit but that fell away quickly at the higher level with opening round defeats at the French Open and Wimbledon.

It was at the Washington Open she finally announced herself with a title win there, her maiden victory. The form fell away sharply after that as she lost in the first round of the next five tournaments she participated in on hard court surfaces.

Which is why, Pegula’s run-up to this final has been very unexpected. Especially the manner in which she came back from a set down against the much-fancied Caroline Wozniacki in the semifinals. Down a set in the match, Pegula came back to level the match by winning the second and then ran away with the match, winning 6-0 in the final set.

Serena Williams v Jessica Pegula Predictions & Tips

Williams is a heavy favourite, with odds of 2/13 to win it while Pegula starts off a rank outsider at 4/1. With Serena being in the dazzling form she has shown over the week, she could well be winning this in straight sets.

Tip: Williams to win in straight sets: 4/6 (Click here to get these odds with bet365)
