Keys Could Become Second American to Win in Brisbane
Madison Keys who is seeded eight this week, dug herself out of a hole and pulled off an incredible comeback in her semifinal to reach the championship match in Brisbane. The 24-year-old American trailed Petra Kvitova by a set and a break, but rallied midway through the second set, winning an astonishing 12 of the final 15 games.
Keys will attempt to become the second American to triumph in Brisbane, simultaneously joining Serena Williams who is a two-time champion in these parts.
The former US Open finalist has now reached a 10th WTA final of her career and remarkably they have all come at Premier level or higher. She is aiming to extend her winning streak in finals matches to three, having won in Charleston and Cincinnati in 2019.
It will be a battle between two of WTA’s biggest hitters when the American takes to court to face another Czech in the final. Will the American deny Pliskova a hat-rick of Brisbane titles and join Serena Williams as the only Americans to win at the WTA Brisbane International?
Pliskova Looking For Third Crown In Brisbane
Karolina Pliskova is quite possibly the best player to have ever graced the Brisbane International hard-courts. Twice a champion and now into her third final where she will attempt to become the first player to win a hat-rick of titles since the tournament’s inception in 2009.
Pliskova’s path to the final was no easy feat. She pulled off a stunning escape in the second set in her semifinal against Naomi Osaka, staving off a match-point at 6-5 on the Japanese’s serve before winning the ensuing tiebreak. The Czech later confessed it was the turning point of the contest.
The World No.2 needed her impeccable serve to dig her out of trouble in the near three-hour epic against Osaka, firing 15 aces and winning 70% of her first serve points.

Two of the biggest hitters on the WTA tour clash and we are almost guaranteed to see more winners than unforced errors. Pliskova is a model of consistency and big serving, and she has continued that pattern in the opening week of the season. In the three matches to the final, she has averaged at least 10 aces per match which in hindsight explains how she won in her narrow victory against Osaka.
Keys on the other hand is no slouch in the service department and she is unlikely to be giving free points from the baseline. With this encounter likely to be battle of who blinks first on serve, it will come down to very few close points which is where the Czech could have an edge.
