Garbine Muguruza v Yafan Wang Head to Head

The pair have never met each other on tour. This will be the first-ever meeting between them.

Muguruza Makes Steady Start to 2020

After continually being a regular in the top 10 rankings in the world for almost four years, Muguruza’s rankings have steadily declined over the last year. Between 2015 to 2018, the Spaniard won two Grand Slams, reached one more final, and one semi-final while even taking the world number one spot for a brief period of four weeks.

But an average record of 23-18 along with failure to go beyond the fourth round at any of the Grand Slams last year has meant that she has dropped to as low as 35 in the rankings. Even a split with long-time coach Sam Sumyk hasn’t brought about a change of fortunes so far.

She did show some encouraging signs of returning to form at Shenzhen last week. She won three matches and reached the semi-finals but failed to grab her chances on crucial points during her loss to Alexandrova Ekaterina.

Being the second seed at Hobart this week, Muguruza will be hoping to get a few more victories under her belt. This will be the first time she will be participating in this event since 2014 when she was the winner.

Wang Hoping to Follow up on an Impressive 2019

After starting 2019 outside of the top 60 in rankings, Wang broke into the top 50 for the first time in her career. She also went on to win her maiden WTA title at Acapulco. She reached the semifinals stages at Seoul and Shenzhen. During the course of the season, she beat likes of Elina Svitolina, Sofia Kenin, and Donna Vekic.

She did suffer a blip in form mid-season, where she went out of six straight tournaments in the first round. But her form picked up soon, and she ended the season with some decent results. She comes into the competition on the back of a second-round exit from Shenzhen. This year she would be looking to improve by going beyond the second round at a Grand Slam which to date remains her best showing at the majors.

Garbine Muguruza v Yafan Wang Predictions & Tips

Muguruza starts the match as the favorite. She has had more tennis under her belt at the start of the year and looks in form. Wang has shown in the past that she can trouble any player on her day. But she is still working her way into the season and won’t cause too much trouble to the Spaniard.

Tip: Muguruza to win in straight sets: 1/1 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
