Vondrousova’s First Match After a Seven Month Injury Lay-Off
The 20-year-old has been out of action for almost seven months due to a wrist injury she picked up during training at Wimbledon. She had to get surgery done on her left wrist, ending what was turning out to be a very promising season for her.
In 2017, Vondrousova won her maiden WTA title at the age of 17. She broke into the top 100 in the same year. After her second-round exit from the Australian Open, the Czech reached quarter-finals or further in six consecutive events. Those included three finals, one of them was at the French Open, where she lost to Ashleigh Barty.
She became the first teenager to play in the French Open final since Ana Ivanovic in 2007. On the back of these impressive results, she reached a career-high ranking of 14.
Qualifier Maria Looking to Win Three on the Bounce
After losing out in the first qualifying round at Shenzhen and coming through two qualifying rounds at Adelaide, this will be the first time this season that the 32-year-old will be playing the main draw match. Maria is a consistent operator who has been a regular in the top 100 rankings for the best part of the last six years.
She had a mixed 2019 with some impressive runs on hard court events as well as a terrible run during the clay-court season. She reached three semi-finals at Nottingham, Guadalajara & Newport Beach. But she also went on a run where she went out of the first round of eight consecutive tournaments.

On paper, this is a very straight forward tie. World number 16 and last year’s French Open finalist is against a player who regularly plays on ITF circuits. But Vondrousova is playing her first match in seven months. It will be interesting to see her fitness levels in the match. Despite this, she is expected to win comfortably.
