Belinda Bencic v Julia Goerges Head to Head

The pair have played each other four times before, with the current head to head record standing at two wins apiece. In 2015 Goerges won at the Australian Open, but Bencic got her revenge in Stuttgart. The German then beat her Swiss opponent in the final of the Luxembourg Open in 2018, but Bencic was victorious at the Canadian Masters last year.

Bencic Ready to Build on 2019

Bencic had a highly successful 2019. Beginning the year outside the world’s top fifty, she won her third WTA title for two years at the Dubai Tennis Championships, despite being unseeded, beating four top ten players in the process.

She went on to win her second title of the year as a wildcard at the Kremlin Cup. and was a beaten finalist in Mallorca. To cap it all she reached the semi-finals at Flushing Meadows, her best ever showing at a Grand Slam.

She did not get 2020 off in the way she would have liked, losing in the first round of the Shenzen Open to Anna Blinkova of Russia, but her straight sets win in the first round in Adelaide over another Russian, the qualifier Darina Kasatkina, was a welcome confidence booster.

Are Goerges’ Best Days Behind Her?

Now 31, Goerges has been a Wimbledon semi-finalist, and finalist in the mixed doubles at Paris in the past. Formerly a consistent top twenty player, who has won 5 WTA titles, most recently at Auckland last year, she is the current German number two player but, like her compatriot Angelique Kerber, there is a suspicion that her best days may be behind her.

Apart from Auckland, she also reached two other finals last year, in Birmingham, where she was beaten by Ashleigh Barty, and in Luxembourg, where she was the defending champion, but went down to Jelena Ostapenko.

She began her year trying to defend her crown in Auckland, but was easily beaten by Caroline Wozniacki in the quarter-finals. However, she advanced to the second round here by beating the Australian wildcard Priscilla Hon in straight sets, but not until the world 124 had pushed her all the way in a tight first set that went to a tie-break.

Belinda Bencic v Julia Goerges Predictions & Tips

Although the pair have an evenly matched head to head record, Bencic’s career is on an upward trajectory, whereas Goerges is probably in decline. The Swiss will start the favourite to win, although, this early in the season, both are still struggling to find form, so it may be close.
