Aryna Sabalenka v Bernarda Pera Head to Head

The pair have only met once before on tour. The American caused an upset when she beat the Belarusian in three sets at the Madrid WTA in 2018.

Sabalenka Coming Through a Tough First Round Match

After a shock first set loss to Hsieh Su-Wei in the first round, Sabalenka had to dig deep to get her victory. The 21-year-old Belarusian was not planning to feature in Adelaide, but a surprise early-round exit from Shenzhen meant that she opted into the event via a wild card.

Sabalenka ended last year on an impressive run winning 10 out of the last 11 matches of the season. It included a title at Wuhan as well as the WTA Elite Trophy. Overall she won three titles last year, all in China. Her other title was at Shenzhen at the start of the season. Despite having an impressive 39-22 win-loss record last year, one thing that Sabalenka couldn’t improve on was her Grand Slam singles record. She couldn’t make it past the third round at any of the Grand Slams.

But she did a remarkable job in the doubles category. She won the women’s doubles at the US Open, partnering with Elise Mertens of Belgium. She also made it to the semi-finals at the French Open.

Pera Coming Through Qualifiers to Reach the Second Round

The 25-year-old Croatian-American has had to come through a tough qualifying draw to reach the main rounds at Adelaide. This will be her fourth match in the last five days as she looks for form ahead of the Australian Open.

Despite being a consistent top 100 player for almost two years now, Pera has never managed to reach even the quarter-final stages at any Grand Slam, Premier Mandatory or Premier 5 tournament. Her only victory against a world top 10 player was against Johanna Konta at the Australian Open in 2018.

Her main success has come at the ITF level, where she has won nine titles in the last seven years. The left-hander will be hoping to achieve more success on the WTA tour, starting with the first Grand Slam of the year. Her third-round appearance at the event in 2018 remains her best showing in Grand Slams to date.

Aryna Sabalenka v Bernarda Pera Predictions & Tips

Sabalenka is looking to get a few victories under her belt before the Australian Open. Apart from her shock loss at Shenzhen, she has looked in the same imperious form in which she ended 2019. Pera, on the other hand, has done well to reach the second round but is unlikely to cause much trouble for the Belarusian.

Tip: Sabalenka to win in straight sets: 1/1 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
