Denis Shapovalov v Ugo Humbert Head to Head

In their only previous meeting, Shapovalov had beaten Humbert in a stiff, three-setter that was played at Lyon last year on clay. What’s interesting to note is the Canadian won just two matches on clay in 2019, of which one was this one against Humbert. He also lost six matches on that surface.

Shapovalov with an Exciting Start to 2020

While it was his second round win over Vasek Pospisil that brought Shapovalov to the quarterfinal here and set him for his meeting with Humbert, it was his performance at the ATP Cup that made everyone sit up and taken notice again.

He ended that tournament at 2-2 on win-loss but those wins came against Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev and one of those two defeats were to Novak Djokovic – and even that match went to three sets. In short, the Canadian, who is currently at his career-best ranking of 13th in the world, is coming off a lot of confidence and form and looking good to make the distance.

And it wasn’t just the ATP Cup either. Shapovalov also finished the previous season with a 42-28 win-loss record, which included a title win at Stockholm late in the year. And he had followed that up with a final at the Paris Masters where Djokovic again registered a win over him.

Humbert off to Two Big Wins

After a third round exit at the Canberra Challenger last week, Humbert seems to have come into his own in this one. The 21-year-old was stretched to a three-setter by Casper Ruud in his opening round match here while then defeating Marco Cecchinato in the second.

Humbert’s improvement in his rankings last season had also seen him qualify to feature at the ATP Next Gen Finals where he won one of his three matches. What made his year a fulfilling one was the three title wins at the Challenger circuit, all of which came on hard court or indoor courts.

Can he notch up one of the biggest wins of his career here by carving one out against Shapovalov?

Denis Shapovalov v Ugo Humbert Predictions & Tips

On paper there’s not much doubt the Canadian will start off a favourite to clinch this but as we get closer to the start of a Grand Slam, there’s always that drop in intensity from the top players as they look to focus on fine-tuning their game rather than the result of the match itself. Instead of the result itself, we think this could get to be a three-setter.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 13/8 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
