Andrey Rublev v Christopher O’Connell Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first meeting between the world number 18, and the Australian, ranked 101 places below him in the world.

Rublev, A Winner in Doha

22 year old Rublev got his year off to a great start, winning his third career title in Doha, where he beat Corentin Moutet of France in the final. He is now the third Russian player ranked in the top twenty after Daniil Medvedev and Karen Khachanov, and will be keen to continue his march up the world rankings after a successful season last year.

2019 saw him win the Kremlin Cup on his birthday, in front of his home fans in Moscow, his first title after a hiatus of two years. He also reached the final in Hamburg, and together with Khachanov, reached the final of the doubles at the Parisian Masters. They lost in the end to the French pair of Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut.

O’Connell. Australian Wildcard

25 year old O’Connell, the world 119, takes his place in the main draw, after being given a wildcard. It is his second time to play in the Australian Open, having been given a similar invitation in 2017, but his career after that was hampered by a serious knee injury, which saw him miss much of the following season.

Returning to action in 2019, he qualified for both the Brisbane International and Sydney international tournaments, before moving to Europe, where he won his first Challenger title in Cordenons, Italy, in August. He went on to reach three other finals, winning his second Challenger event in October in Fairfield, USA, beating the American Steve Johnson in the final.

This will be his third tournament of the season, He played in the Challenger event in New Caledonia, where he got to the second round, going one better last week in Bendigo.

Andrey Rublev v Christopher O’Connell Predictions & Tips

Rublev will start the odds-on favourite against the wildcard who is inexperienced at this level, and has only played in a Grand Slam match once, and that was three years ago. O’Connell will have the benefit of local support, but that will make little difference to the result.
