Serena Williams v Anastasia Potapova Head to Head

This will be Serena’s first ever match against Potapova, a player ranked 90th in the world.

Williams Gunning for Quick Work

If there were any doubts around Williams’ form issues heading into the Australian Open – and to be fair, there would have been a few because of her lack of matches – it was all driven away with her showing at the Auckland Open. She was stretched by Christina McHale in the second round of that tournament, but once she got into her rhythm, there was no looking back.

Amanda Anisimova was expected to give her some sort of a fight, especially given how some of the youngsters have pushed Williams in recent times. And Serena got a nice measure of the fellow American, crushing her 6-1, 6-1 to enter the title-decider.

And then in the final, Williams brushed aside Jessica Pegula 6-3, 6-4 to lift the title, making it 5-0 on win-loss after returning from a longish break. She had last played at the US Open where she went down to Bianca Andreescu in the final but looked as warmed up as she possibly could coming into this Grand Slam.

Potapova in Her First Main Draw

18-year-old Potapova has played in five matches this year but none of them in the main draw of two WTA tournaments. She lost in the Brisbane International qualifier to Yulia Putintseva after winning two in a row, before going down at the second round qualifier of the Adelaide International.

What this means is Potapova is now playing in her first main draw match of the season thanks to her world ranking of 90th on WTA. In 2018, she had reached a career-best of 64th in the world, having also reached the semifinal at the Budapest early last year. There was another semifinal late in the year in Jurmala but that aside, she had a rather underwhelming 2019.

And now with Williams as her first round opponent in this opening Grand Slam of the year, Potapova might need to recalibrate her expectations out of this one.

Serena Williams v Anastasia Potapova Predictions & Tips

Serena couldn’t have hoped for a better start in the tournament as she prepares for sterner tests ahead in the tournament. She should romp past Potapova not just in straight sets but also with minimal loss of games.
