Nick Kyrgios v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head

The pair have only met once on tour so far. The Australian won in the straight sets on the hard courts of Cincinnati last year.

Solid Start to 2020 for Kyrgios

After a troubling 2019, where the 24-year-old served a 16-week ban because of his unsportsmanlike conduct, the Australian seems to have started this season solidly. He won three matches at the ATP open before going down to Bautista Agut. He also won his match against Grigor Dimitrov at the Kooyong Exhibition.

The Australian’s ban last year disrupted what was turning out to be a decent season for him. He won two ATP 500 titles in the first half of the season at Acapulco and Washington. Kyrgios was as high as number 13 in the rankings not very long ago. He also has an impressive head to head record against likes of Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

This will be his sixth appearance at his home Grand Slam. His best-ever showing came in 2018, where he reached the round of 16. In a very popular gesture, Kyrgios has announced that he will donate $200 for each ace he hits this tournament towards the Australian Bushfire victims.

Tough Task for the Clay Court Specialist Sonego

The 24-year-old Italian won his maiden ATP title last year at Antalya. He also won a title on the challenger level and reached the quarter-finals at Monte Carlo. He ended the season with an overall win-loss record of 45-30. On the back of these impressive performances, he reached as high as 46 in the rankings, having started the year outside of the top 100.

But the caveat in that stat is that 26 out of those victories came on the clay courts. His overall record discounting his favorite surface is only 19-17. Even at the start of the 2020 season, he has lost both of his matches on the hard courts at Doha and Auckland. This will be the second appearance for the Italian at the Australian Open. Last year he reached the second round at the event.

Nick Kyrgios v Lorenzo Sonego Predictions & Tips

Kyrgios will progress easily to the second round. He looks in fine form, playing in front of the home crowd and has an opponent who is struggling on faster hard courts. Sonego has done well over the last year, but he would not pose a threat to the Australian in these conditions.

Tip: Kyrgios to win in straight sets: 4/6 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
