John Isner v Thiago Monteiro Head to Head

It will be a first career meeting between these two players.

Isner Playing in His 12th Australian Open

John Isner, seeded at number 19, will be playing in his 12th Australian Open. Since making his tournament debut in 2008, the big serving American has been a mainstay in Melbourne, missing only in the 2013 edition due to a bone bruise in his right knee.

Isner did not have the best of times in 2019, and that was partly due to a foot injury he suffered in the Miami Masters final which saw him miss three months of action. The American went on from being inside the top-10 to just within the top-20, occupying 20th spot. It was Isner’s lowest ranking since 2017.

The 34-year-old has lost in the first round of the last two editions of the Australian Open and he will be keen to avoid an unwanted three-peat at the first Grand Slam of the year.

Monteiro Set For Just Second Main Draw Appearance

Thiago Monteiro is enjoying a career-high ranking of World No.86 and the good news for the Brazilian is that he has done enough to warrant his place at this year’s Australian Open. Another positive side-note is that Monteiro is also the highest-ranked Brazilian in the top-100.

However, the 25-year-old from Fortaleza has been handed a very complicated opener in Melbourne. Monteiro would have to tame the big serve of John Isner if he is to register just the third Grand Slam match-win of his career.

The left-hander had a highly successful junior career, winning many tournaments and peaked at the ITF Junior Circuit rankings at No.2 in 2012. He is yet to make his name at tour-level, but he has been in brilliant form at the Challenger level especially in 2019. He won three Challenger titles at fluctuating periods last year.

John Isner v Thiago Monteiro Predictions & Tips

Monteiro uses heavy topspin to counter his opponents groundstrokes, but he will come up against one of the biggest servers in men’s tennis. Isner does not have a great record in Australia, but he should have enough quality to see off the Brazilian.

Tip: Isner to win in five sets: 9/2 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
