Garbine Muguruza v Ajla Tomljanovic Head to Head
The two have faced off on two previous occasions with Muguruza having won their most recent encounter in 2018. The match was played in Monterrey and the Spaniard won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0. Their first meeting was in Miami in 2014 with the Aussie coming away a winner in three sets.
Bizarre Start for Muguruza
Muguruza has had her struggles, well-chronicled ones alright, but the start to the season has been decent so far. She made it to the semifinal at the Shenzhen Open and then had to retire from her quarterfinal at Hobart but the five wins over those two tournaments would have given her some confidence coming into this first major.
And then she lost the first set of her first round match at the Australian Open to Shelby Rogers 6-0. Who would have thought.
What followed was even more bizarre as Muguruza dropped just one game over the next two sets to complete a three-set drubbing of her opponent. The Spaniard admitted she did not feel too good during the first set, calling the doctor at 0-5 down but pepped herself to hang in the match.
That’s exactly what she will need to do going into her second round encounter against a fighting, home favourite Tomljanovic.
Tomljanovic in Her Fifth Tournament Already
It’s been quite a breezy start to the season for Tomljanovic. She has played in two WTA tournaments and two exhibition competitions in the lead-up to the Australian Open, winning not more than one match in each of them.
She lost to Maria Sharapova in Abu Dhabi, overcame fellow Aussie Priscilla Hon at Brisbane before losing to Karolina Pliskova in the second round there, beat Yulia Putintseva and lost to Simona Halep in Adelaide before extracting revenge from Maria Sharapova t the Kooyong Classic.
And then came the ripper. Facing seeded Anastasija Sevastova, Tomljanvic crushed her Latvian opponent 6-1, 6-1 to move into the second round and set up this meeting against Muguruza. Interesting match coming up between two erratic players in recent times.
