Ash Barty v Elena Rybakina Head to Head

Barty has never played the world number 26 Rybakina before this at the highest level.

Barty Back in the Groove

The Aussie number one needed little over an hour to get past Polona Hercog in her second round win at the Rod Laver Arena. She defeated Hercog 6-1, 6-4 to advance to the third round.

That came after Barty had been stretched to a third set by Lesia Tsurenko in her opening round match. Having lost in the opening round at the Brisbane International to Jennifer Brady, she clawed back to win the title in Adelaide but even that wasn’t as easy as it can get. She needed a three-setter in her second round against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and another against Danielle Collins in the semifinals.

One might argue it would have prepared her for the tough battles ahead and that looked to be the case as she ran past Hercog. However, the one thing to note here is Barty has been playing non-stop since January 14, and this would be her seventh match in 11 days, and with a long way to go for the Australian Open, the Aussie will be hoping for a quick one here.

Rybakina in the Form of Her Life

It was February 2019 and Rybakina was ranked nearly 200th in the world. She won three lower-level tournaments and one in Bucharest to climb up to 37th by year end but what has followed this season has been nothing short of amazing.

Rybakina won four matches in a row to make it to the final at Shenzhen where she was beaten by Ekaterina Alexandrova. And that was followed by her title at the Hobart International, where she added another five wins to her bag.

And then at the Australian Open, Rybakina hasn’t dropped more than four games in any of the sets over her first two rounds, beating Bernarda Pera and Greet Minnen in straight sets to set up this meeting. Having gotten knocked out in the qualifiers of the Australian Open last, this is already a vast improvement for her but can she take that big step forward by upsetting the world number one?

Ash Barty v Elena Rybakina Predictions & Tips

While Barty will understandably be the favourite to win this and bookmakers have her pegged at 1/4, this could go to a third set. Barty in three but to reduce the risk, we are looking at a three-setter.
