Angelique Kerber v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Head to Head

It’s an evenly matched rivalry with both wining seven times each in their previous 14 encounters. Their most recent battle ended with the Russian winning the semifinal in Japan in September 2019.

Kerber Battles Past Giorgi

The 2016 Australian Open champion has developed a habit of reaching the fourth round in Melbourne, and on Saturday, she continued the trend, edging past a hard-hitting Camila Giorgi to secure a spot in the second week of the tournament for the fifth time in a row (and seventh time overall).

Following a brisk start, Kerber was pegged back by the feisty Italian in the second, before making a resounding return in the third to take the match 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3.

The left-handed German, who won the U.S. Open in 2016 and Wimbledon in 2018, converted 5 of 6 break point opportunities against Giorgi and was very disciplined against the former top 30 player, making just 16 unforced errors. In comparison, the far more aggressive Giorgi, who hit 49 winners, made 65 unforced errors, which eventually led to her downfall.

Kerber, who didn’t need much of an effort to beat another Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the first round and Australian Priscilla Hon in the second, needed two hours and eight minutes to win her third round encounter.

Knocked out by Danille Collins in the fourth round in Melbourne last year, Kerber struggled through most part of 2019, reaching just two finals at Indian Wells and Eastbourne and finishing runner-up on both those occasions.

So far she is 4-2 in singles this year and has a good chance of advancing further in the tournament. But up next is a familiar foe with whom she has been involved in a few engrossing battles the past decade.

Pavlyuchenkova Knocks Out the No. 2 Seed

Pulling off a major upset in the tournament, Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova knocked out the second seed and one of the pre-tournament favourites Karolina Pliskova in a hard-fought third round match on Saturday.

In a match that lasted two hours and 25 minutes on Rod Laver Arena, Pavlyuchenkova hit 51 winners and won the key moments to take the contest 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-3). It was the Russian’s first win over the Czech in seven attempts.

Ranked 30th in the world, Pavlyuchenkova is yet to drop a set in the tournament, having won her opener against Serbia’s Nina Stojanovic 6-1, 7-5 and the second round match against American Taylor Townsend 7-5, 7-6 (7-1).

The 28-year-old, who finished 2019 on a strong note, finishing runner-up at the Japan Open and the Kremlin Cup, was a quarterfinalist at the Australian Open last year, where she was beaten by American Danielle Collins in three sets.

Pavlyuchenkova, who has reached the last eight of all majors, will be aiming to reach the quarterfinals in Melbourne for the third time in her career, having also made it that far in 2017.

Angelique Kerber v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Predictions & Tips

Six of their 14 meetings have gone the distance, with the Russian triumphing in five of those, however the German came out on top in the last three-setter they played in Cincinnati in 2018. Despite that success, Kerber will be very nervous if they do split the first two sets; and it might just be the case on Monday, with Pavlyuchenkova prevailing in three.

Tip: Pavlyuchenkova to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
