Garbine Muguruza v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Head to Head

Muguruza and Pavlyuchenkova have met five times, with the Spaniard taking a dominant 4-1 lead in the series.

This will be their first meeting since a first-round match in Birmingham in 2018.

Muguruza Rediscovers Old Form

Garbine Muguruza is on a mission at the 2020 Australian Open. After suffering a dramatic dip in form in the last couple of seasons, many were wondering whether the two-time Grand Slam winner peaked too early in her career. The former World No.1 even dropped outside the world’s top-40 and she was unseeded at the first major of the year.

Muguruza’s abysmal form meant she wasn’t even considered as one of the contenders to lift the title this fortnight despite her Grand Slam pedigree. But that has all changed now after producing quite possibly the most clinical performance of the first week in beating Elina Svitloina in the third round. She is now enlisted in the top five among the odds-makers to walk away with the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup on Saturday.

The Spaniard seems to have rediscovered her old form after reuniting with her former coach Conchita Martinez. Under Martinez, Muguruza enjoyed her most productive year on tour until they parted ways in 2018. But now the 47-year-old is back to coach her countrywoman on a full-time basis, and this is the furthest Muguruza has ever been at Melbourne Park.

Pavlyuchenkova Has Been On A Roll Too

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova is 28 years old, but she has been a veteran on tour for over a decade. Making her 12th Australian Open main draw appearance, Pavlyuchenkova has never gone beyond the quarterfinals in any of her previous 12 or at any other Grand Slam.

Pavlyuchenkova is a former junior Australian Open junior and World No.1, but she hasn’t massively underachieved on the main tour as a senior professional. But that doesn’t mean she has not had a good career.

With 12 tour-level titles to her name, and peaking at a career-high ranking of No.13 in 2011, the Russian has notched up some of the biggest wins of her decade-long career against the very best in the women’s game. On Saturday she knocked out the second seed Karolina Pliskova –  a player she hadn’t beaten in her previous six meetings – in straight sets, and then overcame the 2016 Australian Open in a fourth-round tussle.

Garbine Muguruza v Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova Predictions & Tips

Muguruza has been dominant on their head-to-head, but some of those matches happened during Muguruza’s peak years. Now, this is an evenly poised tie and it could go either way. Muguruza does have tend to have lapses in concentration during matches and against Pavlyuchenkova who is a clean hitter, she could pay a heavy price.
