The 2020 Cordoba Open is an ATP event which will be played on clay courts at the Estadio Mario Alberto Kempes in Cordoba, Argentina, with the tournament starting from February 3. It will go on till February 9. The Cordoba Open forms part of the ATP World Tour 250 Series of the 2020 ATP Tour.

History of the Event

The tournament was first held last year in February, replacing the Ecuador Open Quito as the curtain-raiser to the South American clay court season.

There were eight seeds, headed by Fabio Fognini of Italy, but he was knocked out in the second round, and it was left to two Argentines to contest the final, Guido Pella, the number eight seed, and the wildcard Juan Ignacio Londero. And it was the underdog Londero who triumphed, beating Pella in three sets, despite the fact that he had never won an ATP tour match prior to the start of the tournament.

Who is Playing at the 2020 Cordoba Open?

This year the seedings are headed by the Argentinian duo of world number 14 Diego Schwartzman, and Guido Pella, who is now up to 25 in the rankings.

Regarded as a clay court specialist, Schwartzman has won three ATP carer titles, although the most recent of those victories came on the hard courts of Los Cabos in Mexico last August. He was the beaten finalist in Buenos Aires last February, and again in Vienna in October.

Pella recovered from that setback in Cordoba last year to win his first and, to date, only career title in Brazil a month later. All of his ATP finals, and, all but one of his Challenger Tour successes, have been on clay.

The number three seed, Christian Garin of Chile, must be considered a threat, especially in the light of his achievements in 2019. Having never won a senior ATP match before the start of the year, he reached three clay court finals in the first five months, losing to Pella in Brazil, but claiming victory in the US Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston and, again, at the Bavarian Open in Munich.

Meanwhile, a potential dark horse is Dusan Lajovic of Serbia, who reached the final of the Monte Carlo Masters last year, and who also recently helped Novak Djokovic win the ATP Cup for their country.

One other name to look out for is the Norwegian number seven seed, Casper Ruud, who lost to Garin in that final in Houston, and who went on to appear in the NextGen ATP Cup in Milan last November.
