Sofia Kenin v Garbine Muguruza Head to Head

The pair have met once before in the second round of the China Open last year, Kenin winning in three sets.

Kenin, Slayer of Dreams in Melbourne

21 year old Kenin, who, prior to this event, had never been beyond the fourth round of a Grand Slam before, has earned a reputation over the past week for slaying the dreams of others in Melbourne.

First she ended the campaign of the 15 year Coco Gauff, conqueror of Naomi Oaska and Venus Williams. Then she beat the Tunisian Ons Jabeur in their quarter final, dashing the hopes of tennis fans not only in North Africa but all across the Arab world.

She then topped that by beating Ashleigh Barty, the number one seed, in their semi-final on Thursday, ensuring that Australia’s forty one year wait for another home Grand Slam winner will go on for another 12 months at least.

Despite the heat and the vociferous home crowd, Kenin held firm against Barty, saving two set points in each set, and then sealing the win when the Australian hit a return long on match point.

Muguruza’s Fairy Tale Comeback

Muguruza is bidding to become only the third unseeded woman ever to win the Australian Open, after Chris O’Neal in 1978, and Serena Williams in 2007.

That she is in with a strong chance of doing so represents a remarkable comeback for the twice Grand Slam winner and former world number one who had plummeted down the rankings after several seasons of indifferent performances. However, at the start of the season, she reunited with former coach Conchita Martinez, and the transformation in form has been remarkable.

She had to dig deep though to beat the number four seed Simona Halep in their semi-final on Thursday, in a match played in baking heat. Trailing 6 – 5 in the first set, she saved two set points, and again in the tie-break, which she went on to secure.

Muguruza then lost her serve early in the second set, but then broke back and went on to win the last four games to record a famous victory.

Sofia Kenin v Garbine Muguruza Predictions & Tips

Before the tournament started you would have got long odds on either of these women being in the final, yet alone both of them. Kenin had never been beyond the fourth round of a major before, whilst Muguruza’s Grand Slam winning form seemed to have deserted her completely. Yet, they have both made it through to ensure that a new name will be engraved on the trophy on Saturday night. And that name is likely to be that of Muguruza, who has appeared in three Grand Slam finals before, whilst, for the American, this will be a completely new experience.
