Paes Eliminated in Pune Open

Prajnesh Gunneswaran who was the lone Indian left in the men’s singles draw at the Pune Open crashed out after losing against South Korea’s Soon Woon Kwon by 3-6, 6-7 (5-7).

After having been dominated in the first set, Prajnesh bounced back hard during the second set resulting in a tie. But in the end, Soon Woon Kwon prevailed and he enters into the quarter-finals of the Pune Maharashtra Open. It was still a happy moment for the large number of Korean fans who had come to cheer for Soon Woon.

Another intense game in the singles draw was between James Duckworth and Taro Daniel. The game which lasted more than two hours finally had a winner in Duckworth who won by 6-7, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3.

Duckworth visibly struggled during the initial set of the game but slowly built up first with a tie-breaker in the second set and a resounding performance in the third, to qualify for the quarter-finals.

An upset came in the form of Roberto Marcora beating top seed Benoit Paire in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Marcora came back smart having been down 1-2 down in the first set, to begin with. Meanwhile, Egor Gerasimov takes the Round of 16 games against Nikola Milojevic 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 after crawling back in the second set and the third.

In the Men’s doubles quarterfinals, Romain Arneodo & Andre Begemann won straight sets against the pair of Robert Lindstedt & Robin Haase. The scorecard read 6-3, 6-3. The other Men’s doubles quarterfinals match was prevailed by Jonathan Erlich & Andrei Vasilevski who overcame strong resistance from Stefano Travaglia & Paolo Lorenzi in the first and the third set, ultimately winning 5-7, 6-1, 10-8.

Another upset from the Men’s Doubles came in the form of Leander Paes & Mathew Ebden crashing out having being dominated by Purav Raja & Ramkumar Ramanathan in a 1-6, 2-6 loss.

Paes and Ebden seemed very edgy from the start and it was obvious that there was a lack of focus throughout. A straight-set loss for Benoit Paire & Antoine Hoang, 3–6, 3-6.

The winners of this match, Andre Goransson & Christopher Rungkat will face Romain Arneodo & Andre Begemann in the semi-finals.
