Belinda Bencic v Eugenie Bouchard Head to Head

The pair have met twice before, and Bencic has won on each occasion, with both matches in 2015. Bencic was leading by a set in Eastbourne when Bouchard had to retire and, a few months later, the Swiss woman won a second round match at the Canadian Open in three sets.

Bencic Enjoyed Strong 2019

Bencic began 2019 outside the world’s top 50, but after a gap of more than three years since her last tournament victory, she won the WTA title in Dubai in February, beating Petra Kvitova in the final. She then lost in the final in Mallorca, but won her second event of the year, and her fourth in all, at the Kremlin Cup in October.

Sandwiched between them, she enjoyed her best ever performance in a Grand Slam, reaching the semi-finals before losing to the eventual winner Bianca Andreescu. In the course of that run, she beat Naomi Osaka, one of three victories over the former number one she managed during the year.

Those results moved her into the world’s top ten and she qualified for the WTA Finals for the first time, reaching the semi-finals before losing to Elina Svitolina.

Her form so far this season has been mixed. She lost in the first round in Shenzen, and then travelled to Adelaide where she got to the third round only to lose to Danielle Collins  of the USA.  At the Australian Open she beat former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia in the second round, but was then soundly thrashed by Anett Kontaveit of Estonia in the third round, taking just one game off the world number 22,

Bouchard, a Shadow of Her Former Self

In 2014 Bouchard appeared destined for the very top of the women’s game. She reached the semi-finals in both Melbourne and Roland Garros, and went one better in Wimbledon, where she got to the final before losing to Petra Kvitova. After then reaching the fourth round a Flushing Meadows, she rose to five in the world.

However, her form began to slip, and she suffered a concussion when she fell in the locker room after a match at the US Open in 2015. Whether coincidental or not, her performances proved as unsteady as her balance and she plummeted down the world rankings, finishing 2019 a lowly ranked 215.

She showed some signs of a return to form in Auckland in January, where she got to the third round, beating Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium and the number seven seed Caroline Garcia of France before losing to Amanda Anisimova of the USA. However, she failed to qualify for the Australian Open, losing in her final match in the preliminary tournament to Martina Trevisan of Italy.

In her last tournament, she was heavily beaten in the first round of the Challenger event in Newport Beach by the world 283 Alexa Glatch of America.

Belinda Bencic v Eugenie Bouchard Predictions & Tips

This should be a straightforward win for Bencic who would appear to have all the cards in her favour, despite not being in the best form so far this year. She is playing on a surface she knows well, in front of her home fans, and against an opponent who, in the past few years, has been a shadow of her former self on a tennis court.
