The day of quarterfinals at the Pune Open and Montpellier Open saw some exciting matches and results.
In the men’s singles quarter-finals of the Pune Maharastra Open, Jiri Vesely snatched the match from Ilya Ivaskha in the third set that went on for a grueling tiebreaker. After both won a set each, the final score read 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (13-11).
In another quarter-final, Richardas Berankis pegged back into the game multiple times after being down to finally prevail victory over Yuichi Sugita. He won’t the match, 4-6, 7-6 (6-4), 6-2.
But all was not well for Roberto Marcora from the start who began edgily but could never bounce back. This combined with the brilliance of James Duckworth overcame the Italian by 6-3, 7-6(7-4).
The last quarterfinal of the night was good news for Egor Gerasimov who after being one set down, bounced back with resilience to hold Soon Woo Kwon from victory. Gerasimov won 4-6, 7-6(7-1), 6-4.
Far from Pune at the Montpellier Open, Gael Monfils, ranked No. 9 in the rankings inched closer to his third title of the tournament by beating the Slovakian Norbert Gombos in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4 to qualify for the semi-finals. It is the fifth time in seven appearances has the local favorite reached the semi-finals and he did so convincingly with a match just lasting 73 minutes.
Gael Monfils will be up against Filip Krajinovic who beat Gregoire Barrere of France, 6-2, 7-5. Krajinovic has not won an ATP tour title yet although he has made it to the finals twice, two of them happening in the last season. Monfils will prove to be a tough challenge due to his top form with a 6-2 Win-loss ratio in this year so far.
Meanwhile, Vasek Pospisil beat Richard Gasquet in a match that lasted for just 32 minutes after the latter retired. The other semi-final will be between Pospisil and the winner of the Pierre Hugues Herbert vs David Goffin game.
