Cristian Garin v Andrej Martin Head to Head

These two players have met twice before this, but both those matches came in 2016 and at the Challenger circuit. Garin won the first one in three sets before Martin levelled it off with a straight-set win, both matches coming on clay.

Garin Gearing up for Another Clay Court Title?

After a first round bye, Garin had no trouble crushing Atilla Balazs in the second round, winning 6-3, 6-0. However, his real test came in the quarterfinal when he took on Pablo Cuevas, who grabbed the first set with some ease, 6-1.

This was followed by a Garin comeback, who clawed back to level the match and then scooted off to a win in the final set.

Garin is also coming off a brilliant 2019 season on clay where he won 21 of his 29 matches on that surface. To go with that, he also won two titles on clay, at Houston and Munich, and all of that experience and form should hold him in a good stead in this one.

Outsider Martin Already on Career-Best

Martin is no greenhorn on the ATP circuit, having started his career off in 2005 and at 30 years of age, his best career ranking before this tournament was 98th. He began the competition ranked 100th but having reached the semifinal, he has already achieved a ranking of 92nd – his new best.

He had a direct entry into the main draw of the tournament but following that, to have registered three, back to back straight-set wins would have given him a lot of confidence. He first overcame Federico Coria and Carlos Taberner, two equally lower-ranked players but his best showing came against the 71st-ranked Corentin Moutet as he blazed away to a 6-3, 6-2 win.

Can he take that step up and take the fight to a 31st-ranked player’s camp?
