Elina Svitolina v Bibiane Schoofs Head to Head

The pair have never met before. This will be the first match between the 25-year-old Ukrainian, and her Dutch opponent, six years her senior.

Svitolina with a Mixed Start to 2020

Svitolina is now up to four in the world, which is more to do with the fact that Naomi Osaka has lost a lot of ranking points than to do with her own achievements, as her form so far in 2020 has been decidedly mixed.

The runner-up in the WTA finals last Singapore began her season in Brisbane, but she was thrashed by Danielle Collins of the USA in straight sets, claiming just two games of the world number 50.

She then went on to Melbourne, where she was seeded five, and reached the third round, only to be emphatically swept aside by Garbine Muguruza of Spain.

Latterly, playing for Ukraine in World Group 1 of the Fed Cup, she had an easy win over Viktoriya Tomova of Bulgaria, but then struggled to beat Jane Fett of Croatia, a woman ranked 230 places below her in the world. She was then beaten by Anett Kontaveit of Estonia.

Schoofs is Dutch Replacement Drafted into Tournament

Schoofs, who replaces Priscilla Hon of Australia in the tournament, is currently ranked 155 in the world, and, at age 31, her best years are behind her.

She has never won a WTA title but has six wins on ITF tour, although the last of those was three years ago in Altenkircken, Germany. The Dutchwoman has, however, been in two senior doubles finals, both in Mumbai. She won in 2017 with Victoria Rodriguez, and was a runner-up the following year with Barbora Stefkova.

She has had a disappointing 2020 so far. She failed to qualify for either Auckland or the Australian Open, and lost in the first round in the first part of the Challenger event in Nonthaburi, Thailand. In the second part, she reached the third round but lost to Katarzyna Kawa of Poland.

Elina Svitolina v Bibiane Schoofs Predictions & Tips

Svitolina is the overwhelming favourite to win this match against a lowly ranked replacement. She has not been in good form so far this season, but a gentle opener like this could be the boost she needs for her confidence.
