Wang Off to a Fantastic Start in 2020
The Qiang Wang trail is off to a brilliant start in 2020. Whether that will last for the foreseeable future is a question only the 27-year-old can answer with her on-court performances. And if recent performances are anything to go by, she is destined for a big year.
Wang begun the year with a quarterfinal showing in Shenzhen where she lost to the eventual champion Ekaterina Alexandrova of Russia. And despite losing to Angelique Kerber a week later in Adelaide, she caused one of the biggest upsets at the 2020 Australian Open when she defeated 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams in the third round.
She would go on to reach the second week in Melbourne for the first time, but succumbed to a straight sets loss to Ons Jabeur in the fourth round.
Wang though is comfortably China’s best player right now, and she has been for quite some time. Her breakout year was in 2018 when she won two WTA titles, but it was in 2019 when she peaked at a career-high ranking of World No.12 after making the quarterfinals of the US Open.
Xinyun Playing In Her First Tour-Level Event in Five Months
Han Xinyun is currently ranked at No.186 in the world and her appearances at WTA tour-level events have been few and far between during her career.
In fact this will be her first showing at WTA International level tournament or higher since losing in the first round of the Japan Open in September. The left-handed 29-year-old has featured predominantly on the ITF women’s circuit where she has won a total of 8 singles titles and 25 doubles titles.
She is yet to crack the top-100 in the singles rankings, but she has been ranked as high as No.50 in doubles where she has won three titles at tour-level.

This is a total mismatch and you can see the gulf in class between these two players in the rankings. It would take the most calamitous of collapses by Wang to lose here, but given how brilliantly she has started the year, she should breeze through to the next round.
