Marketa Vondrousova v Ajla Tomljanovic Head to Head

The pair have met once before, on the clay of Istanbul last year, Vondrousova winning in straight sets.

Vondrousova Returning from Injury Lay-Off

Although Vondrousova won her maiden WTA title as a 17 year old at the Ladies’ Open Biel Bienne in Switzerland, it was last year that she came to wider prominence when she beat Simona Halep at Indian Wells, and again at the Italian Open, and then, unseeded, reached the final of the French Open without dropping a set.

Although she lost to Ashleigh Barty in straight sets, she entered the top twenty for the first time.

However, she lost in the first round at Wimbledon and, in the course of that match, picked up a wrist injury that caused her to have surgery and miss the rest of the season.

She returned to the court again in Adelaide in January where she got to the third round, only to lose to Barty again, but was handed a very tough draw in Melbourne and was knocked out in the first round of the Australian Open, losing to Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia in three sets.

Tomljanovic, Australian Number Two

Croatian-born Tomljanovic is now a naturalised Australian, and is currently that country’s second ranked player after Barty. She has never won a senior WTA title, but has been a beaten finalist four times including this time last year at the Hua Hin Championships in Thailand, where she was beaten by the Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska.

Apart from that, her best performance last year was a semi-final in Rabat, where she lost to Johanna Konta of Great Britain.

Her results to date in 2020 have been variable. She reached the second round in Brisbane before losing to Karolina Pliskova, and then, the following week in Adelaide, she also reached the second round, losing to Halep on that occasion.

She did claim victory over Maria Sharapova in an exhibition match in Kooyung (Australia), but, at the Australian Open, she suffered yet another second round defeat, this time at the hands of Garbine Muguruza.

Marketa Vondrousova v Ajla Tomljanovic Predictions & Tips

Vondrousova will start the favourite for this match, based on her higher ranking and superior head to head record. She is still getting back to her best after her long injury lay-off, but should have enough to deal with the challenge of the Australian.

Tip: Vondrousova to win in straight sets: 15/8 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
