Donna Vekic v Kristie Ahn Head to Head

This is the second time these two players will be facing off and Vekic had won their first encounter at the San Jose Open on hard court. It was a fairly straightforward win for Vekic, who came through 7-5, 6-0. Interestingly, that was one of just two quarterfinals Ahn made on the WTA tour last season.

Sluggish Start for Vekic

Ranked 20th in the world at the start of the season, Vekic would have hoped for something better than what has transpired for her this season so far.

There was a first round defeat in her very first tournament in Brisbane at the hands of Yulia Putintseva to kick things off, and that was followed by a quarterfinal at Adelaide. Even there she would have expected to overcome Dayana Yastremska but went out in straight sets.

And then came the biggest upset when Vekic overcame two solid players in the form of Maria Sharapova and Alize Cornet but lost in straight sets to Iga Swiatek in the third round at the Australian Open. And she now plays her first match since that defeat, having opted not to feature in the Fed Cup that followed late last week when Croatia took on Italy.

Ahn Hunting for First Main Draw Win

USA’s Kristie Ahn floated into mainstream news last year when she surprised a few players to make it to the fourth round of the US Open. Her story of having graduated from Stanford with a Science degree and then to have opted to play tennis at this level seemed to have resonated with the fans but more vitally, getting to the round of 16 in Flushing Meadows was a breakthrough after years of trying.

After that she also made it to the quarterfinals at the Seoul Open but a couple of sub-par results followed to end the season.

Ahn hasn’t had the greatest starts to 2020 either, as she failed to qualify for the main draw at the Auckland Open and Brisbane International. Later she was crushed by Caroline Wozniacki in the first round in Melbourne.

Now after winning a couple of qualifiers she faces another toughie in her opener here…

Donna Vekic v Kristie Ahn Predictions & Tips

Vekic should not just win this but do so easily and in doing so, should hopefully build her confidence after her lacklustre start to the season. Straight-set victory for Vekic expected.
