Kiki Bertens v Veronika Kudermetova Head to Head

The pair have never met before – this will be the first match between the world number eight, and the Russian, currently ranked 30 places below her.

Bertens, Defending Champion in St. Petersburg

Dutch number one Bertens will have fond memories of 2019. Not only did she reach five WTA finals, but she won two of them, this same trophy last year, and the Madrid Open, her first Premier Mandatory event. She also reached her highest ever world ranking and, to cap it all, she married her coach in November.

She has already been in one final so far this year, the doubles in Brisbane where, partnered by Ashleigh Barty, the pair lost to the number one seeds, Hseih Su-wei, and Barbora Strycova. She also reached the semi-finals of the same event in singles, before losing to Naomi Osaka.

In Melbourne she reached the fourth round for the first time, but was beaten in straight sets by Garbine Muguruza.

However, she won both her matches playing for the Netherlands in the Fed Cup in the Hague last week, beating the Belarussian duo of Aliaksandra Sasnovich and Aryna Sabalenka.

Kudermetova Overcame Recent Patchy Form to beat Putintseva

22 year old Kudermetova is currently ranked 38 in the world. She has never won a senior WTA singles title, but, last year, did win the doubles at the Wuhan Open with her Chinese partner Duan Yingying. She also won the 125 series event in Guadalajara, Mexico.

She began her season in Brisbane, but failed to qualify for the main draw, but then, in her next event in Hobart, she got to the semi-finals before losing to Shuai Zhang of China. However, she was beaten in the first round of the Australian Open by the Spaniard Sara Sorribes-Tormo.

She carried that poor form into the Fed Cup last week, losing both her qualifying matches to Romanian opponents, Ana Bogdan and Jaqueline Adina Cristian, two women ranked considerably below her.

Despite that indifferent form, she battled past Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan on Tuesday, taking the first set on the tie-break and then, after her opponent had rallied to force a third set, securing the vital break of serve to clinch the match.
