Konta Looking For Her First Singles Win In A While

On road to regaining full fitness, World No. 14 Johanna Konta will be looking to start well at the St Petersburg Open. The fourth seed Briton, who was given a first round bye, struggled with a knee injury last year and chose to sit out of the Fed Cup last week as part of workload management.

Ever since falling to Elina Svitolina at the U.S. Open quarterfinals in 2019, Konta has played in just two matches, losing to Barbora Strycova in the first round in Brisbane in January and to Ons Jabeur in the first round of the Australian Open.

The British No. 1, who, despite carrying the injury since January last year, reached the semifinals of the French Open and the last eight of the Wimbledon in 2019, notched her first win of 2020 on Monday, when she paired with Caroline Garcia to beat Germany’s Vivian Heisen and Valeriya Strakhova of Ukraine 6-3 3-6 10-5 in the Round of 16 of the doubles event in St. Petersburg.

The 5”10’ right-hander will be desperate to notch her first singles win on Wednesday when she takes on France’s Oceane Dodin.

Dodin Yet To Drop A Set

Ranked 159 in the world, Oceane Dodin has had a good start to the tournament in St. Petersburg. Having defeated local player Varvara Gracheva 6-4, 6-2 in the first qualifier, the 23-year-old Frenchwoman beat compatriot Fionna Fero 7-6, 7-6 in the next qualifier.

On Monday, the former World No. 46 put up another dominating performance, defeating Viktoria Kuzmova of Slovakia 6-2, 6-2 in the Round of 32. Dodin converted 5 of 7 break point opportunities and won 61 points, 18 more than her opponent.

Mostly featuring in ITF events last year, Dodin lost in the first qualifier of the Australian Open and couldn’t go past the second round of an ITF event in France in the run-up to the St. Petersburg Open. The winner of one WTA title in 2016, Dodin will look to produce an upset win over Konta on Wednesday to keep her winning momentum going.
