Elina Svitolina v Storm Sanders Head to Head

The pair have never met before. This will be the first match between the 25-year-old Ukrainian, and her Australian opponent who is ranked just outside the top-300.

Svitolina Eased Past Schoofs

Elina Svitolina returned to winning ways after a mixed start to the year. She eased past Dutch veteran Bibiane Schoofs 6-2 6-4 in the opening round to banish the chastening loss in the third round of the Australian Open to Garbine Muguruza.

Svitolina’s presence at the Hua Hin Championships is a major boost for the organizers, as she is quite possibly the main star attraction in the tournament following Eugenie Bouchard’s withdrawal due to injury and Petra Martic’s shocking defeat on Tuesday.

The Ukrainian has reiterated that anything less than the title this weekend will be a huge disappointment considering the depth of the draw in the tournament, and she will need to overcome not just testing opponents but windy and humid conditions in Thailand.

Svitolina hasn’t won a title in over a year, which is quite unusual for her at this juncture, but a big week in Thailand would be a nice confidence booster with the Dubai Championships around the corner –  a tournament she has won twice in her career.

Sanders Resuscitates Her Singles Career

Storm Sanders’ second coming as a singles player is finally paying off big time. The 25-year-old Australian had decided to concentrate solely on her doubles career just a few seasons ago, before a serious shoulder injury wiped out her entire 2018 season.

She struggled financially post-rehabilitation and in an effort to make ends meet, she was part of the backstage team at the 2019 Australian Open crunching statistics for the match analysis team.

Having made a return to the court last October more in hope than expectation, Sanders has been in impressive form on the ITF circuit, winning the biggest title of her career at the Playford W60 at the tail end of last year.

Sanders’ win in the opening round at the Hua Hin Championships was the first time she had won a main draw match at tour-level since beating Shuai Peng in Hobart in 2014.

Elina Svitolina v Storm Sanders Predictions & Tips

Svitolina seems to have hit a rough patch so early during the year, but the scant consolation is that she has the chance to bounce back and win a title this week. While that is easier said than done, she should have too much astuteness to win here comfortably.
